Speed School
According to the International charter for children’s rights, every child has the right to education. The UN millennium development goals have set 2015 as the target year to achieve universal primary education.
Unfortunately Burkina Faso has a very low literacy rate (estimated at 30 percent and less among villagers.) According to UN figures it is also one of the poorest countries in the world, ranking 176 out of 177 countries. Poverty indicators reveal that Burkina is a country where living standards are steadily declining.
Poverty and low literacy rates are two reasons for concern, but there is another grave factor in the education problem. HIV / AIDS pandemic continues to spread among villagers in Burkina Faso. Parents are dying, leaving orphans without adequate support. Village orphans suffer from a loss of social and family contact and lack hope that comes from a Biblical foundation.
These children are sometimes left with relatives or an HIV positive mother and cannot feed themselves nor go to school so they end up being street kids. Those who were going to school are obliged to give up because no one is there to pay the school fees.
This project initiated by ACTS Ministry brings love, hope and a future through holistic development projects providing general school education with an evangelistic program for orphans and vulnerable children aged 8 to 17 years.
ACTS rescues orphans and other vulnerable children from living on the street and from being forced into child trafficking in order to survive. ACTS provides an intensive school program that integrates evangelism to bring children to Christ.
This project involves 1,000 orphans and other vulnerable children in 24 villages in the District of Komsilga. They will be taught the basic foundations during a nine-month period and then testing will determine their grade placement. Students will be integrated into the national education system. Orphans housed at the ACTS Center will be reassigned to the ACTS Center grammar school.
There is no other project in the country like this quick start educational program. ACTS gives children the opportunity to go back to school, while lifting their vision to a higher level. ACTS encourages them to see themselves loved by God and valuable in His sight.
Orphans will learn through Bible study that they do have a father, a Heavenly Father who loves them. Through education and the extension of God’s love in action, it is our hope that orphans will not succumb to the street mentality or become children who will be a burden for society.
With encouragement received from the ACTS staff they will be able to succeed and contribute to the development of the country.
Specific objectives:
- Provide a daily Bible teaching to reach 1,000 children to Christ and disciple them to be mature Christians in the future.
- Provide basic education to 1,000 orphans and vulnerable children and insert them in national school system in the 24 rural communities where ACTS is operating.
- Contribute to the reduction in the number of vulnerable children who end up being thieves, drug addicts or prostitutes in the country.
- Increase number of valid people who can work and contribute to the development of the country and reduce poverty.
As we have already made the necessary assessment, shared the idea with local administration authorities and have identified the locations where the teaching session will take place. Local administration authorities and the population in the intervention zones feel the ACTS quick start education program will be a great benefit to their community.
Village orphans and other vulnerable children will be impacted and work towards self-dependency and support of their own families in the future.
Providing education to children right now is to prepare them for their future and for the development of the whole country. Educating youth gives them a potential to alleviate poverty in Burkina.
ACTS ministry believes that through accelerated education these children will be given a chance to prosper and will contribute to the economy of the villages and the country. A reading people can read and understand the Scriptures.
The Word of God says in Proverbs 22:6 “Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it.”
