ATHLETIC PROGRAM WITH LITERACY AND CREATIVE WRITINGIn 2011 ACTS began a new program for boys and girls from the villages and those attending the ACTS schools. ACTS formed an athletic program!
Village youth are given an opportunity to receive soccer training and join a league run by ACTS Ministry in the rural commune of Komsilga. As you can imagine, this is extremely popular program. Along with the soccer training, youth receive lessons for life. They are taught about children’s rights, about peace and security, justice as learned through scripture and about their worth as unique human beings and biblical principles like honesty, integrity and faithfulness. But we add more…literacy and later, creative writing for children. At the present time, ACTS has a writer and editor courses for adults, but none for children. Children with potential skills would be given courses in basic writing skills. Africa has few indigenous writers and Burkina Faso has fewer than most countries. The future of Burkina Faso rests in the upcoming generation. Children who have come out of darkness into the light would be well positions to write meaningful literature for their fellow countrymen.
Background and Description of Need
Burkina Faso is a developing country where poverty is perceptible at every level of society. The UN ranks Burkina Faso as 175 out of 177 countries on their poverty list. The situation is extremely serious in rural areas. Rural villagers are subsistence farmers who rely on sporadic rains for meager harvest yields. They grow millet and a little corn. During the dry season, crops wither and when rains fail Poverty has been exacerbated by the AIDS pandemic because of the growing number of orphans whose parents died of AIDS. Orphans who flee to the larger cities are drawn into drugs, stealing and prostitution; they do not know what love is like. ACTS' vision is “to bring the love of Christ to the hurting people through education, literacy, publishing, socioeconomic empowering programs which bring life changes and gives hope to the poor.”
